We’re on the cusp of autumn, and farmer’s market stalls are brimming with heirloom tomatoes. To help undo any summer sun damage, fill your basket with this beauty food and head home to make a repairing mask!
Considered nature’s sunscreen, tomatoes are filled with lycopene, which helps protect against UV rays. They also have high amounts of lutein, a pigment that boosts elasticity, fights free radicals and keeps skin hydrated.
Early girl tomatoes are my favorites for this homemade remedy. I even buy an extra handful and make a tasty tomato soup in the evening to give my skin an additional nutritive boost.
There are many variations of this beauty remedy, but the simplest way to make a tomato mask is to squeeze out the juice of half of a tomato and apply the juice to clean skin for 15-20 minutes before washing off with warm water. However, with the addition of one more ingredient, you can also make the mask clarifying, nourishing or soothing.
Dealing with breakouts or oiliness? Squeeze the juice of half a small lemon into the tomato juice for a clarifying effect. Feel like giving your complexion some extra TLC? Add a teaspoon of honey for gentle nourishment. And if your skin is feeling especially sensitive, mix in a tablespoon of Greek yogurt to soothe away any redness or inflammation!
