Skin is one of our first barriers of defense against the outside world, so the occasional bump, bite, bruise or breakout is inevitable.  To soothe and heal these unsightly (and often tender) spots, we’ve compiled a list of the best natural treatments to keep in your beauty First Aid kit!

BUMPS: Fresh Ginger Slices

Skin bumps and lumps crop up from time to time. They can be related to a minor allergic reaction, be part of a rash, or appear as an inflamed cyst.  Whether on the surface of skin or just below it, these bumps can either be especially sensitive or have no pain at all.

Fresh ginger slices placed directly on the bump can lower inflammation, soothe irritation, and heal any minuscule abrasions that led to the swelling of the bump. You can also steep five pieces of peeled and cut ginger in a covered cup of boiled water for 20 minutes.  Allow the water to cool and then dip a cotton ball into the ginger brew and apply to skin for 10-15 minutes as a calming compress.

BITES: Lavender Essential Oil

Bug bites – from mosquitoes, fleas, and other pesky insects – can leave you riddled with itchy and swollen spots. One of the best cures is to apply a drop or two of organic lavender essential oil directly onto the spot. This is called applying it neat. However, if your skin is especially sensitive, mixing a few drops into a teaspoon of almond or coconut oil is best.

Lavender essential oil is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and clarifying.  It will calm redness, reduce swelling and kill any lingering bacteria from the initial bite.

BRUISES: Arnica

A bumped chin or bashed knee can quickly turn your skin an unflattering tint of black and blue. To get your normal color back (and quell the swelling), rub arnica gently into the bruised spot. You can either purchase a prepared oil or make your own ointment using dried arnica flowers. Simply infuse a carrier oil (like apricot, almond, etc) with the flowers for one month in a cool, dark room or cabinet.

Used externally and on unbroken skin only, arnica lowers pain, promotes blood flow and eases inflammation.  It is one of the best (and fastest-acting!) natural remedies for bruises and inflamed tissue.

BREAKOUTS: Sea Salt

Heal acne flare-ups quickly with a homemade Epsom or sea salt paste. The antimicrobial properties of salt dry out pimples and prevent bacteria from spreading and resulting in a further outcropping of zits.

To make, add two tablespoons of sea salt (not table salt, as it has iodine which can be irritating to the skin) to a small bowl and pour in enough distilled water to make a paste. Wash your face and massage directly onto the affected, spotty areas. Allow the paste to soak in for 15 minutes and then rinse off with warm water.

Use these natural remedies and get your skin spot-free!
